To remember and make sense of things

Most of you know that in addition to this blog, I am also one of three hosts over at The Red Dress Club, with my lovely friends Cheryl and Katie.

Aside from my Friday posts, I have truly tried to keep these two blogs separate, even though I love them both. But just this once (okay, I’m sure I’ll do it again at some point, but indulge me) I would like to talk about what we’re doing over there.

We have one day a week where we post a writing prompt, and then another day when people come back and link up what they’ve written in response to the prompt. The writing is always amazing and the enthusiasm, contagious.

Although the prompts allow for both fiction and non-fiction writing, the posts written in response have tended to lean toward fiction, more often than not, and there’s just been something missing for me. I’ve wanted to write and read more memoir. (I don’t write fiction and at this point, have no real plans to do so.)

So, beginning this coming Tuesday, we will be adding another day of writing and I couldn’t be more excited.

We will offer a memoir prompt on Fridays and have everyone come back on Tuesdays to link up their offerings.

Memoir is my passion … it simultaneously energizes and soothes me. It also helps me to remember and to make sense of things.

And I want to share that love with anyone who will join me.

So, if you’re up for a challenge, follow me over there and see what we have in store for you!

The first prompt is up and ready for you.

Much love to all of you … thank you for indulging me.

And, I promise to keep the two blogs separate. For the most part.

This is going to be great. I am so happy you'll be sharing your memoir writing with all of us. What a gift, my friend. What a gift.

  2. Rachel

This is awesome! You 3 ladies are truly amazing writers! Can't wait to read more Red Dress Club posts! (PS- I am the one who reads but never participates!)

  3. Sherri

Oh, this is SO you, Nichole! What a great idea and I think you're on to something.

The fiction is not my first love, I'm not drawn to it at all. I tend more towards the real-life stuff.

So I can't wait to see what's in store!

  4. andygirl

you had me at memoir. now that's my kind of writing.

  5. Kelly

This is perfect! And do no apologize for blending the two blogs- consider them two halves that create the whole you! I think that makes sense!

Can't wait to check out the prompt- since I write from life too! The piece I have for this Friday is of meeting my hubby!

  6. Nancy C

It very well may be that my blog is exclusively RDC inspired posts. There certainly could be much worse things….you three create magic.

  7. Jaime

Hmmm…I'm definitely going to check this out. I'm so completely unsavvy when it comes to all things blog, internet, linking, etc I have yet to try it. But I'm going to try, so thanks for the information.

  8. MelissaDrMom

Oh, I'm so excited about this Nichole! I'm not much of a fiction writer, okay, I'm no good. But…I love writing non fiction and having inspiring prompts to choose from. I used this week's TRDC prompt to inspire a nonfiction piece and now I'm so glad there will be a separate prompt for it.

    Yay! Thank you.

  9. I'm intrigued! I hope I can find time to do one of the memoir posts at some point. I'll follow you over there!

  10. Jill

I'm so glad I started participating in TRDC. I've learned so much already! Glad to see it grow.

  11. TamingInsanity

You guys are so on top of things – that's amazing! Can't wait to see what happens.

  12. Megan-Best of Fates

Awesome! I have spent some time over at TRDC but I admit – I'm really not a fan of online fiction. So I'm super excited it's going to start being part memoir – that's certainly what I'd prefer reading!

  13. Efloraross

It's a great addition, and I know a lot of people are excited about it. Unfortunately, I don't post on Tuesdays. I have a M/W/F blog schedule, and it works for me. I'm not in a position to change it. Also, it is SO hard to read all the entries the one day a week. I don't think I can possibly find the time to read twice as many! But I will try, I promise.

  14. Jessica

Very excited about the Tuesday addition. Looking forward to the focus it will add to my writing and all of the suppport thant always comes with producing a TRDC post.

  15. This is a great announcement! I'm really excited for this – I always read the TRDC prompts but tend to not join in as I don't have confidence in writing fiction.

  16. Natalie

Memoir writing will be hard for me, but I'm excited to try it!

  17. Just had to tell you I'm so glad TRDC is adding a memoir prompt that can be addressed on weekends. You, Katie and Cheryl are three of the best writers I've encountered since I started blogging; but I'm working on a novel these days (crazy, I know), so my fiction-writing time is all booked up (for at least another year???). I hope I can jump in at least occasionally and participate in the memoir prompts. I love the idea of TRDC, but I couldn't fit it into my writing schedule. Good luck to you, ladies. You are fabulous.

  18. ksluiter

I am SOOOO excited about the memoir writing too. Some weeks I dabble in fiction because I can't make nonfiction work with the prompt…but it's not my best or my favorite to write.

I REALLY look forward to working this memoir into my week.

And I want to remind everyone that you don't have to put the post UP on Tuesday…you just need to LINK on Tuesday. So if you post on Monday, that is ok, just link up on Tuesday! I do Top Ten Tuesdays, so my post will probably be up on Mondays instead!

This is going to be SOOO great!!!

  19. Tonya

Exciting!! I am really looking forward to this. I love how the Red Dress Club is pushing me as a writer and I know I'm not the only one. Thank you, ladies.

  20. beforethebabywakes

I think that this sounds right up my alley, but I'm going to do more research on memoir writing. I love fiction writing but I'm not sure that I give my best work in that arena so I'm exited .

  21. sugarbowlmix

I love both fiction and non-fiction. Lately I've really been enjoying memoir. Sounds like fun! I'll try to participate.

  22. Cheryl @ Mommypants

If you want to participate, you can always post any day and then just put in the url on the linkup Tuesday if you want to get readers over to you. ;)

Also, don't feel pressured to read EVERY one. Just as many as works for you! We are grateful for your participation!!

  23. tsonoda148

I love the Friday TRDC so much, and I'm the opposite of you in that I truly love writing fiction… I'm thinking about doing the memoirs, but just not sure yet. Whether I decide to contribute or not, I will still be reading them all, and enjoying them very much, I'm sure!

  24. I do both fiction and memoir–I have even done a play, but that's not for the blog. I think writing both is a good exercise. It's sort of like cross training for your creative mind. Story telling is story telling. Before my second kid surprised us 19 months after the first, I was writing a memoir of my grandmother, mother, and my experience in abusive relationships. I realized, though, that even with my grandma's diaries, I couldn't really tell her truth. So, I have fictionalized it. It is still very much a work in progress. Well, right now it's a work in the drawer, but I'll get back to it. The RDC prompts keep me working out my writing muscle when I don't really have the time to devote to the novel right now. Thanks!

  25. I'm very excited about this! B/c I love memoir. Plus, it's on a day of the week when I don't have a regular feature. :)

  26. kris

    I love reading non-fiction.

Cannot wait to see the posts.

  27. I am participating this week! I think the memoir addition is very appropriate. While I don't write in that genre I LOVE reading memoirs.

  28. Alexandra174

I'm looking forward to this: memoir is my passion.

  29. I am looking forward to reading these!

I feel so very guilty for falling off the TRDC wagon. Time gets away from me every week :( I still try to read and comment, though, because the writing is so spectacular.
