On a trip to the bookstore when Katie was still an infant, I stumbled across an amazing children’s book entitled Someday, by Allison McGhee,* that reduced me to a slobbering, hormonal mess.

I put it on my wish list for Katie’s library and finally bought it for her this past Christmas and when I read it to her on Christmas morning, I couldn’t make it to the end without crying.

Here are just a few of the beautiful pages in this book…

The illustrations are soft and lovely and the words are breathtaking.

If you buy your child one book this month, let it be this one … it’s pure magic.

And if you can make it to the end without crying, you’re tougher than I am!

*I do not know Allison McGhee and was not given this book. I purchased it for Katie. I just loved it so much that I wanted to share it with you.

    Nichole —

This looks like an amazing book. A bit too young for my daughters, but lovely.

Have you ever read Mem Fox's "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge?"

I believe I read that book to the girls about 400 times.

And not once did I make it to the end without tearing up.

  2. CDG

Very sweet. It might be lost on the race cars and dinosaurs and trains crowd here, though…

  3. Nichole

    You won't regret it…it's so lovely. :)

  4. Nichole

I've never read that book, but I just found it online and the illustrations are just beautiful.
I'm adding it to my wish list.
    Thank you!

  5. Nichole

    That's true…
Perhaps you'll need to buy "Someday" someday. ;)

Okay you just did me in, this book was waiting for me when I came home from the hospital after having the triplets and having to leave them in the NICU because I was the only one being discharged. I haven’t opened it since but am glad you helped me do it today.

    Thank you.

  7. I had some books like that.

But, "The Polar Express" was the one that did me in every time.

Fortunately we only read it once a year. But, that meant a year had passed. So maybe that was part of the emotion.

I really love this book. My mom got it for me shortly after I had my son. And even though the book features a mother & daughter it still a universal message. She also wrote one called "Little Boy" that I got for my sons first Easter.

Oh, just these few sweet pages have done me in Nichole! I love, LOVE picture books like this…the words and the illustrations just remind me of a precious time with my kids.

I may have to buy this one for my littlest niece who's two…with the understand that I get to read it to her first.

  10. thanks for the recommendation! Another book you will LOVE is On the Night you Were Born by Nancy Tillman. I cry every time!

  11. Jules

    That is a beautiful book!

  12. Chantelle

Velveteen Rabbit makes me cry every. single. time.

  14. andygirl

I love it! I don't know that my nephew will appreciate it. maybe I'll have to buy it for my future daughter. :)

  15. Oh that sounds fantastic! I won't be able to read it without crying, I'm sure! We have another one that I can't think of the title right now, but it's about a boy and his mom holds him at night and rocks and it shows him grow up and her holding him as he gets older and eventually he holds her. I lose it every time.

OMG I need this book! It looks fabulous. I have been asked multiple times what I hope SB will grow up to be. I don't care what occupation she chooses. My deepest hope for her is that she know the joy of motherhood. I hope I live to see that day!

The book about the Mom climbing in the window to hold him … always makes me cry … but it is a little on the creepy side too don't you think? Think its called I'll Love You Forever. The idea of my mother in law climbing thro my window at night is just all kinds of wrong!
    (and I like her)
My youngest enjoyed a series of picture books about a witch called 'Winnie', loved the illustrations.
We love picture books over here, the library shudders when it sees us come!

  18. I love you every little bit… that is the book I ready to my now six year old when I brought her home from the hospital. We still read it almost every night.

  19. I am a sucker for books like this! Uh….and it will make me cry for sure!

  20. Natalie

I love sweet & sappy stories. My favorite is “Love You Forever”. It makes me cry everytime I read it. I received it for my very first Mother’s Day as a gift & read to my first son daily, or more.

You should check out my blog in the next few days. I’m going to put up a review & giveaway of an equally good, but less known children’s book. It’s called Princess Bubble & the author has a agreed to sign a copy for the winner.

I bought this book for my best friend when she had a daughter! I LOVE this book! it's the "I'll Love you Forever" for moms of girls.

  26. Tracie

That book looks so very sweet.

  27. That book's illustrations are SO gorgeous. And soft and peaceful and beautiful. In other words, kinda reminds me of you.

  28. Tracy

I bought this book for my 2 year old daughter when I was 8 months pregnant with my son. Although this book is supposed to be for my daughter, it brings a lot of emotion to me and sits on MY bookshelf :) I love it. Another good book is "On the Night You Were Born" by Nancy Tillman. It makes my eyes fill with tears EVERY time I read it.

  29. Tonya

I recently picked up this book too. I love it and it's beautiful message.

  30. Hooray for this post! I buy the kids a book for every Christmas and birthday (and usually other holidays, because I love them so). Abbey's birthday is next weekend, and this will be perfect :)

  31. tulpen

    Lovely illustrations.

    Such sweetness!

  32. Cate

I checked this out of our library the other day on your suggestion, and my 20-month-old absolutely adores it! Whenever I sit down she carries this book over to me. I've cried a few times while reading it, too.
