More and Less

I’ve seen so many New Year’s resolutions floating about and I’m in awe of those who can make a resolution and then follow through.  Whether it’s eating better, getting fit, or getting organized. I’m not so great at resolutions.

But this year, I’m going to try to accomplish one thing…

I want to focus more on the small moments. I know what you’re thinking, this entire blog is about small moments. But lately, I have caught myself worrying too much about the big things.  I’ve been worrying too much about Life.

This year I want to spend more time playing Legos and Strawberry Shortcake, building block towers and playing cars, blowing bubbles and riding bikes.

I want to giggle more, stress less.

I want to hug more, worry less.

I want to snuggle more, fret less.

This is going to be a beautiful year.

    I like that.

I've got a Big Goal for this year, but my resolution, as it were?

Do more things that bring me joy.

One of which? Will be reading you, as you focus on yours.

You know? I think you wrote a post a few months back about taking 5 minutes out of your day to play dolls with your daughter… and how much of a difference that made in both of your days. I still think back to that sometimes…

Much like this post, it's such a good reminder that, in the grand scheme of things, the little things ARE the big things.

Can I just tell you that I think of this blog and its tagline (mission?)several times a day? Whether the moment is pure joy or utter frustration I remind myself to breathe and experience it.

I did a post called "10 New Year's resolutions you can live with" and I had some of the very same things on there. I worded it differently but basically it's PLAY with my son. Really play. Run around and throw a ball and wrestle. But PLAY. And the other is to stop thinking of my life in blog stories and just live. The blog stories come a whole lot more naturally that way.

I love this…especially that worry less. I really need to do that!

  14. I love this Nichole! Many of my goals for the new year have to do with focusing on what is important and your are right, what is important are the small things.

I love your blog for this very reason…it really is the small moments that matter the most to our children. I often get lost in the day to day and "to do" list. I really want to spend more time enjoying and playing with my children.

Thank you for your beautiful words and insight. I am really looking forward to Napa this weekend:)

Happy New Year to you and your family :)

ps: we are all about the legos and Strawberry Shortcake over here too ( I have a 5 and 3 year old)!

Couldn't agree more, I try so hard to focus on the small moments but know I lose that focus often and get caught up in big things or forget how much more important it is to play blocks than to finish a load of laundry. I'm sure you will accomplish just what you set out to do and enjoy many small moments in 2011.

Wonderful, just wonderful my friend….it WILL be a beautiful year.

    I see what you mean.

I do. Because I find myself wishing my two teen boys would somehow magically come running down the stairs shouting, "Mommy! Fwench toastis? Fwench toastis?"

Oh, yeah, it's all like that for me these days….

And once you say no to play, you don't get that chance back, and pretty soon, those chances are gone. And you find yourself closing your eyes and squeezing tears out wishing for just one more morning of "Fwench toastis, Mommy?"

Ditto, friend. It's so easy to worry and get caught up in all the little things and turn them into big things instead of enjoying the real little things that matter. Good advice and here's to a GREAT year.

  19. yes. absolutely. i want to be MORE present with my son. He does LOVE to play with me, after all!
